Traditionally, most cosmetic procedures have been associated with lasers. Research has shown that intense pulsed light systems, and in particular Variable Pulsed Light (VPL), is regularly producing better results than most laser units available today.
Permanent hair reduction is achieved through the selective absorption of light by the melanin in the hair. The applied light is absorbed by the melanin, the chromophore that gives hair its colour, with the result being that the hair is heated up. When sufficient intensity and the correct wavelength are applied to the area the resultant temperature rise will be sufficient to cause damage to the surrounding cells, which will then die. This destruction of the cells prevents the follicle from producing further hair growth.
In cases of excessive pigmentation in the skin, photons from the light emitted from the VPL are absorbed by the pigment (melanin) and converted into heat. Where the pigmentation is more dense, there is more heating up and this damages both the existing pigment and the structures that generate excessive pigment (melanocytes). The body recognises the de-natured melanin as waste and begins to expel it from the skin, through the cellular system. This process can leave the skin looking 'dirty' until the expelled cells are desquamated (shed), usually at around 10 days post treatment.
In the case of broken capillaries the process is similar. The photons emitted from the light are absorbed by the oxy-hemoglobin in the capillaries, with the thicker capillaries absorbing more light. The light energy is converted into heat and raises the temperature of enlarged vessels to the point of damage occurring to the capillary walls. This reduces the volume of blood and vessels disappear from view.
Open pores and fine lines are reduced in appearance due to the stimulation of collagen. Visible light absorbed by the microscopic capillaries in the skin surface and raises the temperature enough to stimulate the natural repair, including fibroblasts that create collagen. This process re-moulds, thickens and tightens the collagen layer, diminishing fine lines and open pores.
Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) emits light across a broad range of wavelengths that are far better absorbed by the appropriate structure in the skin.

What are the signs of aging?
